In 1926, a group of dedicated individuals with a common goal of standardizing basketball officiating in RI, banded together to form the RI Basketball Officials Association (RIBOA).  Louis Pieri was elected to the position of president.

 

Prior to this time individuals interested in officiating merely sent his or her name to the Spaulding Officials Basketball Guide and became a registered official.

 

After its formation, RIBOA established procedures for officiating and formalized the requirements to become an official.  RIBOA later became affiliated with the National Association of Approved Basketball Officials, which is now the International Association of Basketball Officials.

 

From 1926 to 2013, the Board only officiated Boy’s Basketball; but merged with the RI Board of Girls Basketball Officials in 2014, and now provides officials for both Boys and Girls High School Basketball games.
